Gwanghwamun - The Southern gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Korea

 

"Gwanghwamun (광화문 in Korean)" is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea. It was built in 1395 under the reign of King Taejo, the first king of the Joseon dynasty.

 

Gwanghwamun gate is the Southern gate of Gyeongbokgung palace and the largest gate than other gates. It is located at a three-way intersection at the Northern end of Sejongno. 

 

The gate went through several destructions and restorations. The large-scale restoration work that happened recently was done and opened to the public in 2010.

 

Gwanghwamun Square is divided into six sections.

 

The statue of the fourth and most respected king of the Joseon Dynasty and the creator of Hangeul (Korean alphabet), "King Sejong the Great (세종대왕 in Korean)" and the statue of a naval commander noted for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Japanese invasions of Korea from 1592 to 1598 and a hero among Koreans, "Admiral Yi Sunshin (이순신 장군 in Korean)" stand in the center of the Gwanghwamun Square.

 

You can also find the main inventions (Hangeul alphabet and scientific instruments) from King Sejong's reign in front of the statue.

 

 

There are several subway stations to get to Gwanghwamun Square.

 

Gyeongbokgung subway station (Line #3), Gwanghwamun subway station (Line #5) and City Hall subway station (Line #1 and Line #2) are the subway stations that you can easily get to Gwanghwamun Square.

 

 

As Gwanghwamun is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and one of the representative places in Korea, you may need to visit here and learn about the history in Korea.

 

Cheonggyecheon, Myeongdong and Insadong are closely located to Gwanghwamun so you may visit those places and feel the city and historical vibes in Korea.
